FAQ CATEGORIES
COUNSELLING
-
Counselling is a collaborative process that gives you space to understand what is happening, recognise the patterns influencing your thoughts, relationships and decisions, and develop practical ways forward. At Comma + Co, counselling draws on evidence-based and trauma-informed approaches, adapted to the person rather than applied as a fixed formula.
People come to counselling for many reasons, including anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, burnout, grief, life transitions, people-pleasing, low self-worth and experiences from the past that continue to affect the present.
-
No. You do not need to be in crisis or have a diagnosis to see a counsellor. Some people begin counselling because something specific has happened. Others feel stuck, overwhelmed or aware that the same patterns keep repeating.
You may also seek counselling because you want to understand yourself more clearly, make an important decision or create change before things become more difficult.
-
Your first counselling session gives us time to understand what has brought you to Comma + Co, what is happening in your life and what you would like support with. You do not need to arrive with a clear explanation or a complete history.
We will also discuss how counselling works, any questions or concerns you have, and whether the relationship feels like the right fit. First sessions are 80 minutes so that this conversation does not need to be rushed.
-
No. You decide what you discuss and when you discuss it. Counselling can focus on what is happening in your life now, practical strategies, current relationships or decisions you need to make.
Past experiences may sometimes help explain present patterns, but you will not be pressured to revisit anything before you are ready. We can work slowly, pause or change direction whenever something feels like too much.
-
Yes. Counselling can help you understand what activates anxiety, why particular relationship patterns keep recurring and how earlier experiences may influence the way you respond to closeness, uncertainty, conflict or rejection.
At Comma + Co, we combine insight with practical strategies so that understanding the pattern becomes a starting point for change, rather than the end of the conversation.
-
Counsellors and psychologists can both provide therapeutic support, but their professional training, registration systems and scopes of practice differ. Psychologists may provide psychological assessment and formal diagnosis, while counsellors generally focus on therapeutic conversations, emotional wellbeing, relationships, life challenges and personal change.
Comma + Co does not provide formal psychological assessment or diagnosis. If another type of assessment or specialist treatment would better meet your needs, we will discuss this with you and support an appropriate referral.
EXECUTIVE COACHING
-
Executive coaching is a confidential, structured process that helps leaders think more clearly, strengthen their leadership capacity and make deliberate decisions about what comes next.
At Comma + Co, executive coaching considers both the professional challenge and the human patterns influencing it. This may include confidence, communication, boundaries, decision-making, workplace relationships, leadership identity, imposter feelings or the pressure of carrying responsibility.
-
Executive coaching is for established and emerging leaders, executives, business owners and professionals navigating increased responsibility, organisational change or a career transition.
You do not need to be underperforming or facing a crisis. Many clients seek coaching because they are capable and successful but want greater clarity, confidence, influence or sustainability in the way they lead.
-
Counselling generally focuses on emotional wellbeing, personal experiences, relationships and psychological patterns. Executive coaching focuses primarily on leadership, professional decisions, workplace relationships and the changes required to achieve a defined professional goal.
There can be overlap because personal patterns do not disappear when someone enters the workplace. The difference is principally the purpose and focus of the work. If you are unsure which service is appropriate, we can determine that together before or during your first session.
-
Yes. Executive coaching can be self-funded or sponsored by an employer. Where an organisation is paying, we establish clear expectations about the purpose of the engagement, any agreed objectives and what information may be shared.
The content of coaching conversations remains confidential unless a different arrangement has been explicitly discussed and agreed with you in advance.
-
Yes. Some organisations fund executive coaching through leadership development, learning and development, or professional development budgets.
Before the engagement begins, we clarify who is funding the coaching, its agreed purpose, invoicing arrangements and what information, if any, may be provided to the organisation.
-
Yes. Comma + Co provides tailored leadership coaching, facilitated workshops and leadership development programs for teams and organisations. Programs can address communication, sustainable leadership, team dynamics, psychological patterns at work, confidence, boundaries and leading through change.
The scope and format are developed around the organisation’s needs rather than delivered as a generic, off-the-shelf program.
-
Counsellors and psychologists can both provide therapeutic support, but their professional training, registration systems and scopes of practice differ.
-
Leaders seek executive coaching for many reasons. You may be:
Stepping into a more senior role
Navigating a career or leadership transition
Managing difficult workplace relationships
Leading through organisational change
Struggling with confidence or imposter feelings
Reconsidering your professional direction
Carrying too much responsibility
Finding it difficult to set sustainable boundaries
Wanting to communicate with greater clarity and influence
Trying to lead authentically rather than perform a version of leadership that does not fit
You do not need to feel overwhelmed or that something requires repair. Executive coaching can be equally valuable when you are preparing for growth or deciding what you want next.
-
No. Executive coaching can support senior executives, business owners, people leaders, emerging leaders and professionals preparing for greater responsibility.
The relevant question is not whether your title is senior enough. It is whether you are facing decisions, responsibilities or workplace dynamics that would benefit from focused, confidential reflection and practical support.
-
No. A mentor usually draws on experience in a similar role or industry to offer advice, guidance and professional knowledge. A coach helps you examine how you think, lead, communicate and make decisions.
Executive coaching may include relevant observations and professional insight, but its purpose is not to tell you how to replicate the coach’s career. It helps you develop an approach to leadership that is credible and sustainable for you.
-
No. A consultant is generally engaged to analyse a business problem and recommend a solution. Executive coaching focuses on the leader: how you understand the challenge, the patterns shaping your response and the decisions or behaviours that need to change.
Comma + Co’s organisational work may include facilitation, training or strategic advice where agreed, but these services are clearly distinguished from confidential individual coaching.
-
Yes. Confidence, self-doubt and imposter feelings are common topics in executive coaching. Sessions may provide space to examine how these experiences appear in your professional life, the situations in which they become more pronounced and the assumptions or expectations associated with them.
The conversation may also consider how you currently evaluate your capability, respond to uncertainty and approach leadership communication and decision-making. The focus and direction of this work will depend on your circumstances and what you choose to explore.
-
Yes. Workplace conflict, difficult professional relationships and challenging team dynamics can be explored in executive coaching. Sessions may consider the interpersonal and organisational context, your experience of the situation and the different factors influencing how you respond.
Depending on what you bring to coaching, the conversation might include preparing for a difficult discussion, examining boundaries, considering different perspectives or reflecting on what the situation means for your role and professional direction.
-
Career transitions are a common focus in executive coaching. You might be considering a new role, leaving an organisation, returning to work, changing industries or reassessing what you want from your career.
Coaching provides a structured space to consider the options, priorities, expectations and practical realities involved. The direction of the work will depend on your circumstances, the decisions you are considering and what you choose to explore.
-
Some clients book a single extended session to work through a specific decision. Others undertake a series of sessions over several months to support a leadership transition or defined development goal.
For employer-sponsored coaching, the duration and review points are agreed before the engagement begins. Self-funded clients can book sessions according to their needs without committing to a fixed package.
-
Executive coaching begins with a clear understanding of what you want to change. Depending on the engagement, progress might be reflected in stronger decision-making, clearer communication, improved boundaries, greater confidence, more effective workplace relationships or progress toward a defined leadership objective.
Where an organisation sponsors coaching, appropriate measures can be agreed at the outset without compromising the confidentiality of the coaching conversation.
-
Possibly. Counselling and executive coaching have different purposes, although the subjects discussed may sometimes overlap.
If you are considering both services, we will clarify the focus of each, whether the arrangement is professionally appropriate and how confidentiality and record-keeping will be managed. In some circumstances, separate practitioners may be recommended.
THE PRACTICAL
-
No. You can book counselling with Comma + Co directly and do not need a GP referral, diagnosis or mental health treatment plan.
Counselling by registered counsellors is not currently included among the practitioner services covered by Medicare’s Better Access initiative. Better Access presently covers eligible psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists and medical practitioners.
-
You may be able to claim a rebate if your extras policy includes counselling provided by an eligible registered practitioner. Eligibility and rebate amounts depend on your health fund, policy and practitioner, so you should confirm your coverage directly with your insurer before your appointment.
PACFA currently has arrangements with several Australian private health funds, including Medibank, ahm, Bupa, HCF and participating ARHG funds.
-
Yes. Comma + Co provides in-person counselling in Highett, Melbourne, as well as secure online counselling for clients across Australia.
Online sessions follow the same professional and privacy standards as in-person sessions. You will need a private space, a reliable internet connection and a device suitable for video calls.
-
Comma + Co offers 55, 80 and 110-minute sessions. Your first counselling session is 80 minutes, giving us time to understand what brings you to counselling and begin the work without rushing.
Ongoing session length can be selected according to your needs, preferences and the nature of the work. Executive coaching and organisational engagements may use different formats depending on their objectives.
STARTING COUNSELLING
-
Session frequency depends on what you are working through, the level of support you need and what is financially and practically sustainable.
Some clients begin with weekly or fortnightly sessions, then move to less frequent appointments as their needs change. Others attend periodically for reflection, maintenance or support around a particular event. We will discuss frequency with you, but there is no automatic requirement to attend on a fixed schedule.
-
There is no standard number of sessions that is right for everyone. Some people seek short-term support for a particular decision or event, while others choose longer-term counselling to work with more complex or longstanding patterns.
We will review the work together rather than asking you to commit to a predetermined program. You can pause or finish counselling at any time.
-
You do not need to prepare an agenda or arrive with a clear explanation of what is going on for you. Feeling uncertain, having several things tangled together or simply knowing that something needs attention are all valid places to begin.
Your counsellor can help you slow things down, identify what feels most important and decide where to start.
-
Generally, counselling is not about someone else making decisions for you. Your counsellor may offer observations, ask direct questions, introduce therapeutic concepts, challenge a pattern or help you consider options and consequences.
The aim is to help you make decisions with greater clarity and self-trust, rather than foster dependence on someone else’s answers.
-
No. Conversation is central to counselling, but sessions may also include practical strategies, values work, pattern mapping, emotional regulation skills, written reflection or exercises drawn from evidence-based therapeutic approaches.
The balance between exploration and practical action will depend on what you need. We will not introduce activities simply for the sake of filling a session.
-
All of those responses are welcome. You do not need to manage your emotions for your counsellor or present your experience neatly.
We can slow down, pause, sit with what is happening or find another way to communicate. You remain in control of what you disclose and how quickly the conversation proceeds.
-
Where appropriate, Comma + Co may provide a brief recap, reflection prompt, resource or agreed action following a session. This is intended to support continuity and help you retain what felt important.
Not every session requires homework or a written follow-up. Anything offered between sessions will be guided by the purpose of the work and your preferences.
-
Yes. You can pause or end counselling at any time. There is no requirement to continue for a predetermined number of sessions or complete a particular program.
Where possible, you may choose to discuss your decision with your counsellor. This can provide an opportunity to reflect on the work, raise any concerns and consider what you would like from the final session. Whether you have that conversation remains your decision.
-
Yes. You can contact Comma + Co to enquire about returning to counselling after a break.
Appointment availability cannot be guaranteed, particularly if some time has passed. Depending on the circumstances, an extended session may be appropriate so there is time to discuss what has changed since your previous appointment.
ONLINE +
IN-PERSON
SESSIONS
-
Online counselling can provide meaningful and effective support for many people. The therapeutic approach and professional standards remain the same; only the setting changes.
Some clients prefer online counselling because it removes travel, makes appointments easier to fit around work or caring responsibilities, and allows them to participate from a familiar environment. Others prefer the separation and physical presence of an in-person session. You can choose the format that feels most appropriate for you.
-
Comma + Co offers in-person counselling in Highett, in Melbourne’s Bayside area. Full arrival information is provided with your booking.
The consulting premises are accessible. If you have any particular access requirements, please contact us before your appointment so we can make practicable arrangements.
-
Yes. You can use a combination of online and in-person sessions depending on your needs, availability and location.
If you need to change an existing appointment from in person to online, please contact us as early as possible. Changes remain subject to practitioner availability and the applicable cancellation policy.
-
Yes. Comma + Co provides online counselling and executive coaching to clients across Australia, subject to practitioner availability, professional scope and any location-specific requirements that apply.
If you will be outside Australia at the time of a session, please let us know before booking. Professional, insurance and emergency-support considerations may affect whether we can provide the appointment while you are overseas.
-
If an online session is interrupted, we will first try to reconnect using the agreed video platform. If the connection cannot be restored, we may continue by telephone, reschedule the remaining time or agree on another arrangement.
The available option will depend on the length of the interruption, privacy considerations and the circumstances of the session.
SESSIONS, FEES
+ BOOKINGS
-

First session, 80 minutes: $250
Standard session, 55 minutes: $180
Extended session, 80 minutes: $250
Long session, 110 minutes: $315
Your first counselling appointment is always 80 minutes. This gives us time to understand what brings you to counselling, explore what you hope to gain from the work and make sure we are a good fit before continuing.
After your first appointment, you can select the session length that best suits your needs. The 80-minute extended session is our most popular option because it provides enough time to explore connections and process difficult material without feeling rushed.
-
Payment is due at the time of your session. We accept payment using the methods provided in your booking confirmation or invoice.
Organisational coaching, leadership development and training engagements are invoiced according to the terms set out in the agreed proposal.

Medicare rebates are not currently available for counselling sessions with Comma + Co. You do not need a GP referral, diagnosis or mental health treatment plan to book an appointment.
You may be eligible for a private health insurance rebate, depending on your insurer, level of extras cover and the practitioner you see. We recommend checking directly with your health fund before your appointment.
-
For in-person appointments, Comma + Co requires at least 48 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule because consulting-room costs are incurred in advance.
For online appointments, at least 24 hours’ notice is required.
Cancellations made within the applicable notice period may incur a cancellation fee. Missed appointments are charged at the full session rate. Please see our Cancellation and Late Arrivals Policy for complete details.

Yes. Before your first appointment, you will receive forms covering relevant personal information, informed consent, privacy and the terms of the service.

Regular appointment times may be available by arrangement, depending on your preferred frequency and practitioner availability.
Recurring appointments remain subject to the standard cancellation policy. We will confirm whether appointments are to be booked individually or reserved in advance.
-
A waitlist may be available when appointment capacity is limited. You can provide your preferred days, times and session format, and Comma + Co will contact you if a suitable appointment becomes available.
Joining the waitlist does not guarantee an appointment within a particular period. You can also book another available time while waiting for your preferred appointment.
-
If your practitioner is unexpectedly unavailable, Comma + Co will contact you as soon as practicable. You will be offered the opportunity to reschedule or receive a refund or credit for any amount already paid.
No cancellation fee applies when Comma + Co cancels the appointment.
PRIVACY + CONFIDENTIALITY
-
Yes. What you discuss in counselling is treated as confidential and is not ordinarily shared without your consent.
There are limited circumstances in which disclosure may be legally required or professionally necessary, including a serious concern about immediate safety or a valid legal requirement to provide information. Where possible and appropriate, we will discuss this with you before information is shared.
-
You can ask to access personal information held about you or request a correction if you believe the information is inaccurate.

Where an employer or organisation sponsors coaching, the confidentiality arrangements are agreed before the engagement begins. An organisation may receive agreed information such as confirmation of attendance, coaching objectives or a high-level progress update. The content of coaching conversations is not ordinarily disclosed without your consent.
-
Before employer-sponsored coaching begins, we clarify what information, if any, will be shared with the sponsoring organisation.
This may include agreed coaching objectives, attendance or a high-level review of the engagement. The content of individual coaching conversations remains confidential unless you have explicitly agreed to a different arrangement or disclosure is legally required.
-
Yes. Comma + Co keeps professional records to support continuity of care and meet ethical, legal and professional obligations.
Session notes are concise and relevant. They are not intended to be a word-for-word account of everything discussed. Records are stored within secure practice-management systems and accessed only for authorised purposes.

The technology supports documentation but does not replace professional judgement. Every draft is reviewed and edited by your practitioner before it becomes part of your record.
Further information is available in our AI in Session Policy.

No. Comma + Co is a counselling and executive coaching practice. It is not a psychology or psychiatry practice.
Comma + Co does not provide formal psychological assessment, psychiatric care, medication or clinical diagnosis. If another form of assessment or specialist care appears more appropriate, we will discuss this with you.
-
Comma + Co provides integrative counselling, drawing on a range of established therapeutic approaches according to each client’s circumstances, preferences and reasons for attending.
Rather than applying one model to every person, your counsellor may draw from several approaches within the same session. These can include:
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Exploring personal values, psychological flexibility and how you relate to difficult thoughts and feelings.
Attachment-based therapy: Considering how early and significant relationships may be connected with present patterns involving trust, closeness, communication and relationships.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Examining relationships between thoughts, emotions and behaviour, including patterns that may influence how you interpret or respond to particular situations.
Internal Family Systems-informed therapy (IFS): Exploring different internal “parts”, such as a critical, protective or people-pleasing part, with curiosity and compassion.
Person-centred therapy: Providing a respectful and non-judgemental therapeutic relationship in which your perspective, preferences and lived experience guide the work.
Psychodynamic therapy: Considering unconscious patterns, defence mechanisms and ways that past experiences may continue to influence present relationships, feelings or behaviour.
Solution-focused therapy: Exploring your preferred direction, existing resources and aspects of your experience that are already useful or working well.
Somatic approaches: Bringing appropriate attention to physical sensations, bodily responses and the relationship between emotional and physiological experience.
Trauma-informed practice: Recognising the possible influence of trauma and adverse experiences while attending carefully to choice, consent, emotional regulation and the pace of the work.
You do not need to select a therapeutic approach before beginning counselling or keep track of which framework is being used. Your counsellor will consider what may be relevant, explain the approach where helpful and invite your feedback throughout the work.
Comma + Co offers integrative, attachment-informed and trauma-informed counselling in Highett, Melbourne, and online across Australia. The therapeutic focus is developed collaboratively and may change as your circumstances, preferences or reasons for attending change.
-
We will discuss this openly if your needs fall outside our qualifications, professional scope or capacity.
Where possible, we can provide information about another practitioner, specialist or service that may be more appropriate. You are also free to decide at any time that the relationship or approach is not right for you.
-
Yes. Comma + Co practitioners participate in regular professional supervision as part of ethical counselling practice and professional registration.

-
Comma + Co practitioners work in accordance with the ethical codes, professional standards and scope-of-practice requirements of their registering bodies, including the Australian Counselling Association and the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia.

-
Yes. Comma + Co maintains appropriate professional indemnity and public liability insurance in accordance with professional registration and practice requirements.
PROFESSIONAL
RELATIONSHIPS +
BOUNDARIES
-
Sometimes. A support person may attend where their presence serves a clear therapeutic or accessibility purpose and everyone understands their role.
Please discuss this with us before the appointment. We will consider your privacy, informed consent, the effect on the therapeutic relationship and whether another form of support would be more appropriate.
-
Usually, we would avoid creating overlapping therapeutic relationships that could compromise confidentiality, impartiality or your sense of safety.
The appropriate arrangement depends on the circumstances. We will discuss potential conflicts openly and may recommend a separate practitioner for your partner or family member.
-
To protect your privacy, your counsellor will generally allow you to decide whether to acknowledge the connection. They may not greet you first or explain how they know you to anyone accompanying them.
You are welcome to say hello, ignore them or respond in whatever way feels most comfortable. Your counsellor will not discuss counselling matters in a public setting.
-
Please raise the connection, even if it seems minor. Knowing one another through work, community, family or social networks does not automatically prevent counselling, but it may create a dual relationship that needs careful consideration.
Together, we can assess whether the connection could affect confidentiality, boundaries or your freedom to speak openly. If necessary, we will help you find another practitioner.
-
Yes. Feedback is welcome, and encouraged, including when something has felt unclear, unhelpful or uncomfortable. You can raise a concern at any stage, and we will respond with care, openness and respect.
Where appropriate, we can discuss the issue together and consider how you would like to proceed. Information about formal complaints processes and relevant professional bodies is available in our Statement of Ethical Practice.
SAFETY + URGENT SUPPORT
-
No. Comma + Co is an appointment-based counselling and coaching practice. We cannot provide emergency assistance, continuous monitoring or an immediate response between sessions.
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call Triple Zero on 000 or attend the nearest hospital emergency department. For confidential crisis support in Australia, Lifeline is available 24 hours a day on 13 11 14
-
You can contact Comma + Co between appointments about bookings, rescheduling and relevant administrative matters.
Email and text messages are not continuously monitored and should not be used for urgent or crisis support. Matters requiring therapeutic discussion are generally reserved for a scheduled appointment, where there is appropriate time and privacy.
You can request an earlier appointment if something arises between sessions, subject to availability.
-
If information shared in a session raises a serious concern about immediate safety, we will seek to understand the circumstances and discuss the available support where possible.
In limited circumstances, Comma + Co may be required to contact emergency services, a relevant authority or another appropriate person without consent. Any disclosure will be guided by professional and legal obligations and limited to information relevant to the situation.
WILD CARD QUESTIONS
-
Yes. You are welcome to bring notes, write down questions or use your phone to keep track of what you would like to discuss.
Some people prefer to prepare, while others arrive without an agenda. Both are completely acceptable. Notes can be used as a prompt without determining the whole direction of the session.
-
Silence and pauses are welcome. You will not be expected to answer immediately, fill every quiet moment or explain something before you have found the words for it.
You can take time, ask to pause or let your counsellor know when you need a different pace.
-
Yes. You can ask about the counselling process, your counsellor’s qualifications, the approaches being considered, professional boundaries or anything else relevant to your participation.
Your counsellor will answer openly where it is professionally appropriate to do so and explain if a question cannot be answered fully.
-
Please let us know what supports your participation. This might include additional processing time, written information, a clearer session structure, direct language, reduced sensory demands or advance notice before introducing an exercise.
You do not need a formal diagnosis to discuss communication, sensory or processing preferences. Any adjustments will be considered collaboratively and within what is practicable in the service.
-
Yes. You are welcome to bring water, a notebook, a sensory item or another small object that supports your comfort during the session.
For online appointments, you can arrange your environment in whatever way supports your privacy and participation.
-
Please say so. Counselling is collaborative, and you are not required to agree with an observation, interpretation or suggested approach.
Your perspective remains central to the process. Disagreement can be discussed directly, and the conversation can be reconsidered or approached differently.
